Learn about Medicare @ Yuma County Libraries

In September 2014, the Yuma County Library District, in collaboration with AARP, will launch an Information Literacy Series to help educate people about health care, Social Security, and fraud safety.

Karl Koenig, a trained volunteer with Arizona’s Community Educators Program, coordinated through the Arizona AARP State Office will present “Medicare” September 27th, October 3rd, 4th, and 25th. Did you know that Medicare comes in one of two options: Original Medicare or Medicare Advantage? How do Parts A, B, and D work with each of these two options? Attend a presentation by AARP to learn more about this important subject.

Nazi Book Burnings and Censorship @ Main Library

In conjunction with Banned Books Week, Arizona Western College Professor Kimberly Poorbaugh will discuss “Nazi Book Burnings and Censorship” on Wednesday, September 24th, at 6:00 p.m. at the Main Library. There is no charge to attend.

In conjunction with Banned Books Week, Librarian Jim Patrick presents “Music Censorship: Banned Bands and Taboo Tunes” at Yuma County Libraries. Enjoy an interactive history of music censorship, including stories about the Ed Sullivan Show, the anti-ragtime movement, and the FBI investigation of “Louie, Louie!” There is no charge to attend.

Learn the art of scrapbooking! Beginning Thursday, September 4th, the San Luis Library will host “Scrapbooking with Emma” every Thursday at 4:00 p.m. for teens and adults. Alzheimer’s: Know the 10 Signs @ Heritage Library

On Thursday, September 18th, the Heritage Library will host “Know the 10 Signs: Early Detection Matters,” from 12:00-1:00 p.m. This free educational workshop is presented by the Desert Southwest Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association.

This interactive workshop helps participants to learn the 10 Warning Signs of Alzheimer’s disease and the importance of early detection. We’ll separate myth from reality and address commonly-held fears about Alzheimer’s. Hear from people who have the disease and find out how to recognize the signs in yourself and others and what to do about it.

eResources @ Foothills Library

Explore the digital side of the Yuma County Library District! On Saturday, September 13th and 20th, the Foothills Library will present “Library eResources” at 3:30 p.m. Topics include language-learning software, eBooks and eMagazines, streaming movies, and more! Attendees will have a chance to participate and ask questions. Basic computer skills are required. There is no charge to attend.
