Alex Garcia, Teen/Spanish Outreach Coordinator, has been chosen as the Yuma County Library District’s Employee of the Month for January 2018. This award is to recognize an employee that inspires us with their effort and attitude.
What was said about Alex:
“Alejandro Garcia (Alex) has done an outstanding job in representing the Yuma County Library District. His drive and passion to enhance the services offered to the Hispanic community is evident by the programs, events, and training we offer in this area. The participation in these programs continues to increase. He is working extremely hard to make these services available and get the information to those who benefit from these services. Alex also goes to Guadalajara every year to meet vendors and research the current collection of materials and brings them back to our libraries.
The ongoing events we currently have are: Clases de Ingles, ESL Club, Clases de Ciudadania, Computacion Basica, Club de Lectura, and Club de Manualidades. The seasonal programs are: Un Suerno Diferente, Mujeres Con Alas, Mi Voz Es Tu Voz, Mi Rincon de Reflexion, Dia de los Muertos, Cinco de Mayo, Dia de Campesinos, and outreach at the Tamale Festival. Alex has something offered at our libraries every day of the week. Alex is actively involved with City of San Luis, City of Somerton, City of Yuma, Border Health, Cenpatico, Mexican Consulate, Sunset Community Health, Comite de Bienestar, Yuma County Housing Authority, Chicanos por la Causa, Campesinos Sin Fronteros, Reforma, the Advancement to Spanish Speaking Patrons along the Border, Center de Culteral, U.S. Federal Immigration Dept., and many other non-profits to bring forth education, training, health, art, social climate, and opportunities.
Alex has developed the Spanish Outreach program within the Yuma County Library District over the last 3 years. He continues to develop and grow the program that has accomplished many success stories. We have had patrons who participated in the ESL course attain their GED. We have had many of the participants further their education with our community college. I have 3 volunteers that came from his ESL course volunteering in technical services so that they can enhance their skill level and conversational English language speaking. Others have continued the art of giving back because of the opportunities shown them.”
Alex received a mounted certificate, a name plate in the book of his choice, an Employee of the Month pin, and his photo will be hung at the Main Library during the month of January. Congratulations Alex!
