HISTORICAL NOTE:  The Sheriff’s Office was created when Yuma County was established in 1864,  According to the Howell Code, the Sheriff had charge of “the county jails and prisoners; served or executed all processes, writs, precepts and orders issued by a lawful authority; and served as Assessor and collector of taxes for the county.” The Sheriff also “gave public notice of the time and place of sale of property to be sold for delinquent taxes; sold goods and chattels of persons who neglected or refused to pay taxes; collected poll taxes; and received and recorded the fees for the issuance of all business taxes.”

The office of Sheriff was re-established by the 1912 Constitution when Arizona became a State.  Although county sheriff duties have changed over time, these early dockets reflect much of the tax assessing and collecting functions of the office.  Dockets are logs containing brief entries of court proceedings which include names of the parties and a summary of the case.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE: Handwritten transcriptions from original Yuma County Sheriff Docket log books, likely compiled by volunteers and preserved here as “ready reference” materials for researchers.
