You’ve been asking for it….
And asking for it.
And asking for it some more, and we are thrilled to FINALLY tell you that our supremely popular Teen Anime Club is returning to the YCLD in January of 2023! (YAY!)
The club will be scheduled for the 2nd and 4th Saturday of each month, so our first meeting will be January 14th. It is open to all teens ages 13-18, and you don’t have to pre-register to attend, just come on over to the Main Library Teen Room (2951 S. 21st Dr, 2nd floor) at 2PM and join us.
For our first meeting, you can vote on what genre of anime we will watch: comedy, sports or sci-fi. That being said, here are some of our favorite anime in each of those categories. The companion mangas are available at the library for you to read too!
Best Comedy Anime/Manga:
Laid-back Camp Yes, it’s an anime about camping. Yes, it’s actually funny. Also, what kind of weird school has a camping club?
Mob Psycho 100 Mob (he’s a person, not, like, THE MOB) is secretly psychic, and tries hard not to lose control of his power. Unfortunately, he’s also assistant to a con man, and his life is a little crazy.
Spy X Family A spy dad, an assassin mom, a psychic child and their precognitive dog try to do their jobs without any one of them knowing what the others are really doing. Shenanigans ensue.
That Time I Got Reincarnated as A Slime A 37-year-old salary man is stabbed to death (again, YES it’s a comedy). He is then, as the title implies, reincarnated as a slime in a strange new world. Part fantasy, part isekai, totally hilarious.
Best Sports Manga:
Haikyu!! Shoyo is obsessed with volleyball, but he’s a bit on the short side to really be a contender. Still, Shoyo is determined to be like “The Little Giant, '' an amazing, but also short player he has seen on TV.
Blue Lock (Ok, ok, it’s on order y’all! It’s ON ORDER, we SWEAR! We’ve had SO MANY requests for this one!) Japan wants a world cup win, so they hire a new, let’s say… “eccentric” coach. His solution to get the team to the top - kidnap every High School soccer player in the county and lock them in a training facility called “Blue Lock '' until one one is left standing to become the nation’s next great striker.
Best Sci-Fi Anime:
Captain Harlock When a mysterious alien force invades Earth, teenager Tadashi Daiba joins up with the only people brave enough to defend the planet: Captain Harlock and his ragtag crew of renegades!
Mobile Suit Gundam, the Origin I could go on and on and on about how many series this big bad mamma-jamma of the Giant Robo genre has spawned. If you want to get REALLY old-school, start with the 1979 Mobile Suit and go from there.
Neon Genesis Evangelion One of the all time Sci-Fi classics, it has spawned multiple manga series and legions of fans all over the world. (It also not so subtly inspired the movie Pacific Rim).
World Trigger One fine day, a gate to another world opens in Japan and monsters called “neighbors” start pouring through. Years later a mysterious white haired boy enrolls in school. He is part human, part neighbor, all fighter.
Of course, we have a lot more manga to choose from at all of our libraries, and you can even stream some anime titles for free on hoopla. That should keep you plenty busy until we see you at Anime Club!
