Summers in Yuma mean two things: it’s going to be REALLY hot, and you can cool off and have fun at the Yuma County Library District.
This year’s Summer Reading Program kicks off on May 27th, with the theme “All Together Now,” so plan on seeing a lot of programs you can do together with friends, family, or brand new people who will become your new friends. There will be community art projects all over the library buildings, STEAM fun for the whole family and several special guests we’re very excited about!
Speaking of special guests: our old friends, Arizona Rick the Balloon Cowboy and Wildman Phil will return this year. If you’re never seen their shows, Rick does an amazing, very interactive storytelling and comedy show for kids of all ages and makes incredible balloon sculptures. Phil brings in a host of creepy crawlies, including snakes, lizards and even a spider or two for people to learn about and interact with.
This year we’ll also be featuring two new guests: Grupo de Danza Rio Colorado will deliver the best in traditional Mexican Folklorico dancing for the whole family to enjoy, and Henna by Pheobe will teach teens about the history of the art of henna tattoos, and even give teens ages 13-17 a chance to get their own temporary henna tattoo.
Another new offering this year will be the collectible card game “Reading Friends” (based on Dover Public Library’s Reading Dragons). Kids ages 5-12 will have chances to earn cards through reading, which they can then use to play a fun “rock, paper, scissors,” style game or trade with friends.
There will also be some other surprises along the way, so make sure to check out our Library Events Calendar for the complete list of activities at each one of our branches. Just make sure you register well before July 15th when we will wrap up the 7 week program.
Registration begins Saturday, May 27th! To register, just come into your closest library branch. There will be incentives and prizes for all patrons ages 0 to 100+! See you this summer at the Yuma County Library District!
